Hello there!
I have finally emerged from the comfort of my mobile development bubble and ventured into the vast unknown depths of the world wide web. This is my personal site, where I will write about my ongoing and past projects and which I will use as a dumping ground for everything else that is of interest to me. Feel free to check out my past projects, learn more about me or read some of my recent posts below. Depending on the topic you will find a mixture of English and German.

ODA - Parking Fines #2 - Locations
In my last post I have explored the parking fines dataset that is provided by the city of Aachen through its open data portal. While this exploration already led to some very interesting findings, I also noticed that the location information that is provided in the original dataset is not usable for a detailed analysis. In this post we will explore the available location data in more detail and try to convert the provided natural language descriptions into coordinates.

OpenData Aachen - Parking Fines
The city of Aachen has been running an open data portal for some years now. The goal is to make data that is collected by the city such as general information about the city (streets, facilities, …) or the residents (common names, deaths, …) accessible to the interested public. Since November 2020 the project is also active on twitter under the @opendataaachen handle. This is how I became aware of the project. From time to time they publish new and interesting datasets, which I enjoy taking a look at. I always wanted to write a post about it, so here it is.

Da ich nicht finde, dass viele dieser Fragen von offizieller Seite gut beantwortet werden hier der Versuch einer kurzen Zusammenstellung der wichtigsten Punkte.

Unscramble
For a long time online news offerings have mainly sustained themselves through advertisements on their site. In recent years, more and more of these sites, espacially those that have a backround in offline print have also started offerering some kind of premium subscription. A common practice is to mix some amount of free content with premium content that requires a premium membership. Those premium articles are then locked behind a paywall that obfuscates the content in some way. In certain cases there are ways to circumvent this obfuscation and we will take a look at one example of that in this post.

A Strange New World
This is a short story about how I setup this server, which admittedly might not sound that interesting at first. I mean it has been done a million times before and just because the experience was new for me, it probably is not for you. Anyhow I want to give some insights on how the world of web looks like to an outsider coming from an iOS development background with no prior web experience. And while the setup process itself might not be that interesting, something very interesting happened at the end of it. So stay tuned!
